We've had hot dog stands on the street corners downtown awhile now, but the food trucks are an exciting new addition to the Twin Cities! There are a couple dozen of them popping up on Nicollet Ave and Marquette Ave in downtown Minneapolis and more around historic St Paul. Click here to check out Citypage's map of nomnoms on wheels.
About a week ago, Steve and I noticed a groupon for food truck fair. It was $7 for admission rather than $15. But I quickly realized "Wait....that makes no sense!" After all, why pay $7 to help gather food trucks when many are already within a three block walk of one another? We checked out the food truck fair's webpage and realized they won't even have that many food trucks in attendance. All I can say is "LAME!"
Instead of putting $7 towards a dumb idea, we went downtown yesterday to have a food truck fair of our own. We checked out the menus of about a dozen or more food trucks. Popular items are tacos and pulled pork. We also noticed a sushi truck (named Sushi Fix) receiving decent attention. Another popular truck was Dandelion Kitchen, which sold organic and local foods. Their salads sounded delicious!
Isolated from the others was World Street Kitchen, which sold "yum yum rice bowls," red curry chicken tacos (um DELICIOUS sounding!), and jerk beef tortas. I paid $8 for the gigantic (or should I say gigante?) torta shown below. The base was a crunchy, warm French bread, topped with a generous amount of jerk beef. Spilling off the top was a big pile of cilantro, cabbage slaw, and some kind of nommy sauce. I think there was melted cheese somewhere in the delectable mess. Well-worth the $8! Delicious AND huge! That's my kind of meal! I suspected it would be yummy since there were about eight or ten people ahead of me in the fast-moving line.
Steve got a couple smoked chicken tacos from a place that was called something like "Redsmoker." You'll notice it because it is an older-looking, red truck. You'll also notice that it has about two things on the menu and NO one in line. If you watch them make your food, you might also notice that they scoop Costco peach-mango salsa (straight from the canister) onto your tacos. If you are foolish enough to try it, you will probably notice their food is like "meh." Here is Steve's scatching review: "This is something I'd make if I didn't have any other time or food. I'd be like 'Oh, here's some cooked chicken, let's put it on a tortilla with salsa.'" I tasted a bit. It tasted like...nothing. It's kind of embarrassing that a food truck that specializes in smoking chicken would do it so poorly. Sometimes, you hit a bum note on a menu but you can chalk it up to potential negligence because the menu is too expansive. In this case, that excuse definitely does not hold since (as I already mentioned) the menu takes about three seconds to read.
I hope to get to sample more items from other food trucks in the upcoming weeks! Also, how awesome would it be if we had some of these food trucks on campus!? I might die of excitement!
