Home-grown herbs

basil
One of the reasons we chose our apartment was the large windows. Natural light makes me feel so happy, and recently I've discovered another source of happiness: growing plants! In the past, I've neglected plants or overwatered them, so I started hesitantly by growing basil. Our plant has thrived, and I've learned I love tending to flora.  Every time I water our basil, I get a wonder whiff of the leaves. Delicious!
thyme
Steve's mom gave us some thyme, which we repotted to give it more space. If we nurture this during the fall, hopefully it will nurture us back by turning into yummy soup in the winter!

cilantro sprouting
We are huge fans of cilantro. Sorry to all the people who have the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap. You are missing out. I grew up with tons of cilantro on our Vietnamese food, but Wikipedia claims it is in Scandinavian food. I'm really doubting this one since the most exciting thing in Norwegian food that I've found is copious amounts of butter and sugar, but I'd love for someone to disprove me.  Maybe my brother in Trondheim can figure this one out for me.

You might also know this plant as coriander. In case you didn't know, cilantro usually refers to the leafy green part while coriander refers to the seeds, which can also be used in cooking.

aloe

Surprise! Aloe is edible! Not to say that I've eaten it, but this is how I will justify including it in this blog dedicated to food! After Jeremy and Liam generously babysat this big guy for almost an entire year, Steve's ready to reclaim it. Cute memory related to aloe: last summer I sunburned my back, so Steve picked a juicy leaf and gently rubbed the leaf's goop onto my angry skin.
