First Glance at food in Taiwan

I know you have not heard from me in over two weeks! Sars! I am not dead and did not fall off the edge of the world. I just had finals and Christmas, and then flew over the edge of the world to Taiwan. So, really I have not had any time to pick up a camera, let alone consider cooking or eating anything. Today was our first day exploring Taipei, so I tried to take a few pictures. There will be definitely more to come! Street food looks so interesting/crazy, so it should be exciting to post all the pictures I take! I promise I will limit it to food related pictures :)

We went to an awesome bakery with the most beautiful cakes! I was so enamored with them that I pulled out my camera and started snapping pics. I was so enthralled that I didn't even notice the shop workers speaking to me. I guess they were telling me that I couldn't take pictures of their cakes. Oops. I didn't notice though since I don't know Chinese. I feel like not knowing the native language can either mean you can break lots of rules innocently or you can get in a whole lot of trouble. So here are the beautiful cakes that almost got me deported from Taiwan!

hello kitty! or "xiao mi hao!"

This picture cannot possibly do these cakes justice.

The workers said I could take a picture if I was in it. I guess Steve forgot to get the cakes in there... cmon! But that's ok. Now you get to see the cute purple top his aunt bought me ^_^

Also, I was quite interested in the vending machines that sell all sorts of interesting foodsies and drinksies.  I think it's especially cute that the sides say things like "I <3 milk!" Super cute. The vending machines have drinks like Coke (no big deal), juices (it's interesting to look at the variety), peanut soups (I had no idea such a thing could exist!), and some bottle with a bunch of Chinese words along with the word "sweat" (I am hoping that they mean you should drink it while you are sweating and working out... I don't want to drink someone's sweat!!).
I love milk...but the vending machine sells other stuff, too.

Finally, there was a super old man at a park who was surrounding by squirrels and birds. They loooved him, maybe because he was a gentle old man, but mostly because he had a big bag of food. He would hold out a piece of bread and animals would come nibble it from his fingers! Crazy! Yes, I know this is barely related to food.
This old man is feeding squirrels straight out of his hand!
